Shinano Otari earthquake

The Shinano Otari earthquake (信濃小谷地震) was an Earthquake that occurred on April 28, 1714 (Shōtoku 4, March 15) in Japan's Shinano Province (near present-day Hakuba, Nagano Prefecture).¹²³⁴ Its magnitude was M6¼.⁵⁶ In the Kotani Plain area, many houses collapsed, and the intensity is estimated to have been around Shindo 7. The earthquake caused heavy damage centered on the Himekawa River basin. In Koyama village alone, at least 100 people were reported dead.¹² Overall, records remain of 37 injured and 194 houses collapsed.³ In the 2014 Kamishiro Fault earthquake, damage to houses was concentrated in the Horinouchi district of Kamishiro in Hakuba village, which is also known to have had most of its houses destroyed during the Shinano Kotani earthquake.⁷
